The NFECs’ “Real Income Experience” Financial Education Workshop Provides Scholars Eye-Opening Preview of Future Finances

A National Monetary Educators Council (NFEC) financial literacy event entertained a lot more than 100 high school students this summer at the Simon Loved ones Foundation’s annual Summer Conference, held at Chapman University in Orange, CA. These students, college hopefuls identified as Simon Scholars, participated in the Genuine Cash Experience (RMX), a hands-on funds management workshop.

Throughout the Real Income Encounter, Simon Scholars visited twelve separate booths and practiced generating the life decisions they’re likely to face when they move away from residence. Participants went via the process of completing private budgets as they visited the stations and interacted with more than 30 volunteers. Students practiced deciding types of automobiles they wanted, how significantly they wanted to save, whether or not they would rent living spaces alone or with roommates, desired lifestyles, investment techniques, and other options designed to prepare them to head off to college.
Participants expressed several reactions to the Actual Cash Knowledge. As one Simon Scholar commented, “I was fairly clueless about funds. But now I feel confident in myself that I actually have an concept how to handle my cash.” From yet another Scholar, “I like how they created these games enjoyable due to the fact I thought this would be boring, but now I’m thrilled to learn this.”
Prior to the workshop, attendees completed a monetary literacy test to measure their financial aptitudes. At pre-test, 52% of the attendees received a failing score. However upon completion of the income management workshop, the very same test yielded a 90% pass rate—an improvement of more than 40%. The pre- and post-test measure was based on the NFEC’s national financial literacy test, which measures current understanding level, motivation to learn, and understanding of the 1st steps toward managing one’s personal finances in a number of widespread areas.
The RMX cash management workshop was designed around economic education and core topic standards.
